One remote engineer suits a single core workflow, a founder who needs decisions made rather than escalated, and a codebase one person can hold in their head. You get continuity and no handover loss.
A dedicated remote development team suits parallel workstreams, a support rota, and an organisation whose risk model needs more than one person to know the system. I am the first of those — if you need the second, hire an agency, and be sceptical of any solo developer who tells you otherwise.

You do not have to take anyone's word for it, and you should not have to.

How do you hire a remote developer you have never met?
- Judge the things that survive distance: a written scope produced before any quote, a codebase you can have independently reviewed, and a clear answer about who owns the repository and accounts. Ask about one past architectural decision and its trade-off — a developer who can explain what they gave up has actually made the decision, rather than followed a default.
Do we need overlapping working hours?
- No. The process is built so progress does not depend on us being online together — scope is written, decisions are recorded, and work is visible in the repository as it lands. Calls are scheduled when one is genuinely the fastest way to settle something, at a time that suits whoever is joining.
How do we handle contracts and payment across countries?
- Work is agreed in writing before it starts — scope, what is excluded, and what happens when scope changes. Payment runs in stages tied to that document rather than to hours, so what you are approving is a deliverable you can see. International transfer is a solved problem and not something you should have to price into the decision.
Can you work with our existing team and processes?
- Yes — your branching model, review standards and tracker, not mine. The one thing worth agreeing up front is how much scoping happens before work starts: I work best owning a piece end to end rather than receiving it pre-decomposed into tickets, and teams that prefer the latter should say so early.
